Climbing in the Park

Joshua Tree, California

Climbing is very popular in the Park. At one time, Joshua Tree (“JTREE”) was considered just a training ground, but Joshua Tree is now considered a climbing destination in its own right.

There are Over 6000 Climbing Routes
in the Park!

…And those are just the named routes. There is climbing everywhere you look.
The Mountain Project maintains a comprehensive map of routes in the park.

When is Climbing Season?

Joshua Tree National Park is in the High Desert, with elevations from 3000 to 5500 ft.
FALL / SPRING - These are the best times in the park for climbing. In spring there is a chance for Wildflowers!
WINTER - Is OK as well, but be prepared for some snow days (which are amazing!)
SUMMER - No. It is just too hot, even in the high desert!

“Climber Coffee” in the Park

Hidden Valley Campground
October Thru April / Saturday / Sunday / 8-10am

You're invited to stop by Hidden Valley Campground from 8:00-10:00 am on Saturdays and Sundays from mid-October through April. Check the park calendar to see if Climber Coffee will be running during your visit. Bring your own mug and enjoy a free cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa. Climber Coffee is a great chance to get answers to your questions.

Learn from a Local Guide

If you've always wanted to try out climbing, then hook up with one of the many guide companies who will help you get started. These companies have the right equipment, they know the best spots for your experience level and they know the park. It is best to start out with an expert guide.
